This sale of Finest and Rarest Wines in London totalled £1,019,383 ($1,345,586) exceeding presale expectations. 93% of lots found buyers spread across 21 countries.
Pétrus 1989 achieved the highest price of the sale, reaching £28,200 for 12 bottles, while two bottles of Romanée-Conti 2006 sold for £16,450. Competition from saleroom, telephone and online bidders contributed to 69% of lots selling over the top estimate.
Stephen Mould, Head of Sotheby’s Wine, Europe , commented: “We saw a very strong start to the season with keen interest from buyers around the world eager to snap up an array of wines from different regions. Two private collections led the sale, the first featuring top Bordeaux and Burgundy of excellent provenance from a country house cellar. Prices soared for mature Bordeaux, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Domaine Leflaive, with 9 bottles of Chevalier Montrachet 1985 from Leflaive selling for £10,575. Elsewhere, red and white Rhône from Chave and and Italian wines from Giacomo Conterno were also in demand.”

On 14 September, Sotheby’s London is honoured to offer two superb private collections brimming with fine wines for cellaring or immediate consumption. Right Bank Bordeaux includes Pétrus 1989, Lafleur 1989 and 1990 and Cheval Blanc 2000, while Left Bank rarities include Lafite 1945, Latour 1986 in Jeroboam and Haut-Brion 1989 in double magnum.
Sauternes abounds, with Doisy Daëne 1928, d’Yquem 1948 and d’Arche Crème de Tête 1961 together with d’Yquem 2001 in handy half bottles and the 1989 in impressive double magnums. Burgundy gems include La Tâche 1942, Echézeaux 1966 DRC and Romanée-Conti 2006 plus Bonnes Mares 1989 and Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 1990 from de Vogüé.
Stunning White Burgundy features Grands Crus from Leflaive and Ramonet in vintages from 1985 to 2011. Hermitage La Chapelle spans 1962 through to 2012, including the fabled 1990 vintage and a selection of vintages direct from the cellars of Paul Jaboulet Aîné. Seldom-seen Alsace and German wines from the 70s, 80s and 90s are represented by producers such as Léon Beyer, Zind-Humbrecht, Schloss Johannisberg, Schlossgut Diel and Wegeler Dienhard.
Italian stars include Costa Russi 1986 and Sperss 1997 from Gaja together with Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Riserva Monfortino in vintages from 1996 to 2001. A stunning range of Spain’s iconic Vega Sicilia ‘Unico’ runs from 1936 to 1998, including some verticals and magnum formats. Cult-wine Pingus also features.
Exciting large formats include 9-litre Salmanazars of Vigna L’Apparita Castello di Ama and Dominus in 6-litre Imperials from the past decade. Krug 1990 leads the Grande Marque Champagne while Port aficionados will be lured by Fonseca 1963 and Quinta do Noval Nacional 1994.
